• Standing by on VHF channel 68

The Tortugal marina is located about 22 km upstream from Livingston, Guatemala. We are located about 1 km past the town of Fronteras, also known as Rio Dulce.

Head up river from Livingston through the canyon. Navigate across the Golfete and then enter the Rio Dulce itself. You’ll eventually see the Rio Dulce Bridge. Sail under the bridge and continue up river about one kilometer where you’ll see us on the right side.

DIRECTIONS FROM LAND

If you need a ride from Fronteras, we will pick you up free of charge. Here is how to get a ride to Tortugal, which is 5 minutes upriver from Fronteras:

• Hail us by VHF radio on channel 68 (check with a local restaurant to use a radio)
• Telephone: 502-5306-6432 or 502-7742-8847
• Catch a water taxi. Go to the municipal dock (under bridge on western side)

CROSSING THE BAR IN A DEEP DRAFT VESSEL

Photographer Steve Jost gave us this report on “tipping” a deep draft boat across the bar at the mouth of the Rio Dulce:

“I might add for your web viewers, that the “tipping” process was a lot less stressful than I thought it would be. Basically, the “tipping” boat just takes one of your halyards and attaches it to another 150′ line on his boat. He then motors off on your beam and takes up the tension on the line. You can then control the heeling by motoring toward or away from the “tipping” boat at your own pace… he just keeps the tension on the line. It only took us about 10 minutes to get across.

Total price: $50.00US…sure beats overheating the engine trying to plow through the mud!”
